Cyberbullying – Do you know this kid?

September 26th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Thanks to Naomi and her blog The Innovative Educator I came upon another great video from Childnet International. Naomi reminds us that we know this kid. Do you?

    Thanks for sharing Cindy!

Great video – although the ending was a little too simplistic for my liking.

It did a great job of showing the subtleties of bullying – and the devastating emotional effect on the victim. The rolled eyes, the turning away, the laughing as you pass by – it’s all so crushing to a young spirit! And it can be so random!

But I know from my own experience that it’s not as easy to deal with – often teachers don’t now how to handle it and really, whole school and home cultures have to change, so there are no quick fixes. As a parent, that’s one of the most difficult things to deal with, because you’re watching your child in pain and you want a solution NOW! But what can you actually do??

Telling the teacher, having the principal get involved – sometimes that can actually make the situation worse for your child on a day-to-day basis. It’s probably different if it’s gone far enough for the police to get involved – but what about the other 95% of situations where it’s not that serious (but equally devastating)?

One of the most important things I got out of that video was the need for adults to persist when they sense something’s wrong. We have to find the ways to start the conversations with our kids – even when we don’t have answers!

The best advice I got in my situation was from Cindi Seddon at http://www.bullybeware.com
She counselled me to help my child build positive relationship experiences OUTSIDE of school, so that she didn’t end up feeling like she was incapable or unworthy of friendship. And that helped empower her – and she was better able to deal with the stuff at school as a result.

This is a tough conversation for all of us – parents, teachers, principals, kids… And yet so important!!

I agree with you Heidi that the ending seemed simplistic. How difficult it must be for children to create a comfortable space out of the same surroundings. I wonder what the expert advice is on staying or leaving to start anew.

And thanks for the ideas about creating positive self-worth outside of school.

Great topic to address on the issues of technology. Cyberbullying is all around us and it does need to stop. Growing up is already hard and this just makes growing up a lot harder.

I really didn’t like the video but it is helpful for teachers to understand how cyberbullying can affect a young life.
